Suburban Retreat home design by Awad Architects

Suburban Retreat

Comfortable for two, welcoming for many, this custom home design will evolve alongside its owners.

A Lighter, Brighter Home for Empty Nesters

They were longtime city dwellers approaching a new chapter of life. With their kids growing more independent, they wanted a home that felt easier, lighter, and more intentional — not smaller, just smarter. A place designed for everyday living, but ready to welcome family and friends whenever the house filled back up.

An opportunity emerged close to home: an empty lot next door to their friend Matt, owner of Caritas Builders. Having previously explored early concepts for this same site, Awad Architects understood its potential from the start. Working closely with Caritas Builders and the homeowners, the design quickly became a true collaboration — grounded in trust, clarity, and shared goals.

The home was shaped around how they live now and how they’ll live next. A main-level primary suite supports long-term comfort, while the upper level provides flexible space for returning kids and guests. Daylight, open connections to outdoor living, and a flowing floor plan make everyday life feel effortless. Thoughtful details — like a coffee bar and butler’s pantry — quietly support both quiet mornings and lively gatherings.

The result is a warm, light-filled home that balances simplicity with generosity. Comfortable for two, welcoming for many, and designed to evolve alongside its owners. By aligning architect, builder, and client early in the process, this once-empty lot became a home rooted in connection — to place, to people, and to the life unfolding inside.
